into the Temple (Liturgikon, p. 224).
From 26 November through 24 December, we will sing the Kontakion of the Preparation for the
Nativity of the Lord (page 225).
Our Offerings
to the Lord
The collection taken in the Liturgy is part of our
worship. We offer the Lord our lives,
our prayers, our gifts of bread and wine, and our financial gifts. Last Sunday, about 120 people attended the
Liturgy. Our offering totalled $1354 in
the ordinary collection, $460 for stole offerings, $25 for candles, $100
donation to NAMY, and $625 for the new roof.
Not everyone can make an equal gift, but everyone can make an equal
sacrifice. Please make a generous
sacrifice to support your church in proportion to the many blessings God has
given you.
After Liturgy, James deSpelder Will Report on his Year
in Scotland
James deSpelder spent the past year in Glasgow, Scotland, in ministry
with city youth. After the Liturgy today,
8 November, he will make a presentation to us about his experiences there. He is grateful for the generous support he
received from St Joseph’s parishioners.
20 More Tickets Must be Sold or Parish Dinner will be
Cancelled
We need to sell at least 20
more tickets today for our third annual St John Chrysostom Banquet that is
scheduled to be held in the parish hall following the Liturgy on next Sunday,
15 November. Ticket sales have been
slow, so if 20 more are not sold today the dinner will be cancelled and tickets
may be turned in for refunds. Tickets
for this catered dinner cost $12 for adults and $6 for children 5 to 12. Children under 5 years old will eat for
free. Because the meal will be catered, we will not be able to sell tickets
at the door on the day of the dinner.
Buy your tickets now from Pat Kuri or Kay Nakfoor. St Joseph’s NAMY group will present a special
program before the dinner.
Feed the Hungry—Bring Donations for our
Holiday Food Drive
Our Holiday Food Drive will be coordinated by Our Lady’s Society and
NAMY. From now until the new year, we
will collect non-perishable foods to give to a local food bank. Canned foods, healthy breakfast cereals,
dried pasta and beans, peanut butter, powdered milk, baby food, etc. are
especially needed. Toothbrushes and
disposable diapers are also always needed.
Our donations will be taken to the food bank today and 22 Nov. and 6 and
20 Dec. Anything collected after that
will be delivered early in January.
Meetings This
Week
Tonight, Sunday 8 November, 6-8 pm—NAMY, in the parish hall
Wednesday 11 November, 6:30 pm—Parish Pastoral Council,
in the parish hall
Parish Council
Sets Recommended Donations for Weddings, Baptism, Funerals
The Parish Pastoral Council has established standard
offerings for Weddings, Baptisms, Funerals, Memorial Services, and the use of
the parish hall for mercy meals. The
Council recommends an offering to the church (not to the priest) of $250 for
Weddings, Baptisms, and Funerals of active, contributing parishioners. For those who are not active, contributing
parishioners, the recommended offering is $500.
The recommended offering for Memorial Services is $100 to the
church. For use of the parish hall for
mercy meals, the Council recommends an offering of $150 to cover supplies,
setup, cleanup, etc. Note that these are not fees; the Church
cannot charge for services. No one will
be refused the services of the Church if they are unable to pay.
New SOPHIA Magazine is Available
The Fall 2015 issue of SOPHIA magazine has been mailed and can also be picked up in the
narthex. Be sure to read it for
spiritual inspiration, informational articles, and news from around the diocese
and around the world.
Saturday Vespers Discontinued
Unfortunately, attendance at Great Vespers on Saturday evenings has
dropped to zero for several months. As a
result, Saturday evening Great Vespers, which is preparation for our Sunday
celebration, has been cancelled, effective immediately. We will still celebrate Great Vespers
whenever possible on the eve of Great Feast days and in connection with other
special events, such as retreats and days of reflection.
NAMY Works (For You)
The members of our NAMY group are available to work for you! Yard work, house work, garage cleaning,
window washing—whatever projects you need help with. Even a private violin concert. This is a fundraising project; make a
donation of whatever amount seems right to you.
All proceeds will go into the NAMY bank account, not to the individuals
doing the work. Contact any youth group
member to schedule the work you want to be done.
The Bishop’s
Appeal: Now is the Time for Mercy and Generosity
WE NEED YOU to get personally
involved in assuring that our precious Melkite liturgy and tradition are passed
on faithfully to future generations. The
Bishop’s Appeal supports evangelization, education, seminary training, works of
charity—and much more. Please respond
with a generous heart. If you have not
already made your gift, please do so today so that 100 percent of our parish
will respond to Sayidna’s call. Please
do not you’re your contributions.
Instead, give them to Fr James to mail for you. You will save 49 cents and he will be able to
keep track of participation by St Joseph’s parishioners. Thank you for your generosity. Last year, we did not meet our $2500 parish
goal. This year, let us be more generous
and beat that goal.
